For some people, it starts with health. For others, it starts with the animals. But all in all, cruelty-free living is on the rise and we want to talk about why it's here to stay!

Thankfully, platforms such as Instagram allow us to be inspired in terms of meals, ethical living and discover new sustainable brands that are popping up all the time. However today we wanted to round up the top 5 ways living a cruelty-free lifestyle will absolutely change your life. You’ll thank us at the end!

  1. You are helping the animals

Saying no to animal suffering is one of the best decisions of your life. Knowing that you are not contributing to an industry that makes money by the slaughtering of animals is such a wonderful feeling! Whilst most people love animals and oppose cruelty to animals, most people eat animal-derived products.

All sentient beings experience emotions - ranging from joy, fear, love, despair, grief, and even jealousy and rage. There is a concept called ‘cognitive dissonance’, whereby people categorise certain animals as food objects and abstract their reasoning or emotional capabilities at the same time. Have you ever felt emotional by seeing a mother dog with her puppy and then having lamb for dinner? If you have, then it’s time to make a connection between what’s on our plates and the animal it came from!

  1. You are helping the environment

We already talked about this topic in our previous article. Although recycling our rubbish and cycling to work are amazing ways to help the planet, one of the most effective things an individual can do to lower their carbon footprint is to avoid all animal products.

The production of animal produce has a heavy burden on the environment – whether it’s the water required to feed the animals, to their transport, and the feed, animal farming is one of the main responsible bodies for habitat loss, species extinction and deforestation.

 

  1. You are doing a favour to your health

You all know we should eat more greens. But why not more yellows? More purples? More reds?  Plants are the best source of minerals, and anybody can find relevant scientific information on how to follow a more plant-based diet. We are living in times where the UN recently unveiled that the consumption of red and processed meats are a source of cancers and diseases. Times where Netflix is adding documentaries on sustainability and health such as ‘Cowspiracy’ and ‘What The Health’. How crazy is that? To think that an intergovernmental organisation of a world-scale calibre and the most well known streaming service is giving us all of this enlightening information!

The consumption of plant-based foods will give you unparalleled levels of health. All types of fruits, veggies, legumes, grains and herbs and spices are life! On top of doing a favour to your heart, you are also reducing your risk of diseases thanks to the intake of antioxidant-rich foods and improved gut health. On top if all, your body and mind will feel more clear, light, and you won’t ever feel heavy after a meal ever again. High performing sports people and celebrities such as Lewis Hamilton, Novak Djokovic and the Williams sisters are even endorsing following a plant-based diet!

 

  1. You are saving money

Diet-wise, consider how much you spend on rice and beans? Hummus and potatoes? Animal produce is inherently more expensive that plant foods. The simple reason behind it being that animals need more water, food, and energy and they also create much more waste. Plants also need their share of water and energy, but to a much lesser extent, hence their naturally cheap prices. A basic wholesome plant-based diet that avoids processed foods will give you all the nutrients you need to thrive on a plant-based diet – a plan your wallet will thank you for!

Fashion-wise, leather items tend to me more expensive than their faux counterparts. This also applies to other materials such as velvet, wool, silk and fur. Going cruelty-free will make you feel like you are standing up for the voiceless, whilst reducing the strain on the food chain and on climate change.
